In a story that has left neighbors stunned and social media buzzing, a 27-year-old woman discovered that a complete stranger had been living in her apartment for three entire weeks—without her knowledge.
The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she returned home last Tuesday after a short vacation. “I opened the door, and at first, everything seemed normal,” she said. “Then I noticed a note on my kitchen table: ‘Don’t be scared. I’ve been taking care of things.’”Initially thinking it was a prank, she entered her living room—only to find a man sitting on her couch, casually scrolling through her laptop. “I froze,” she recalled. “He looked up at me and just said, ‘Hi, don’t worry, I’m not here to hurt you.’”The man was later identified as 32-year-old Hasan Rahman.
According to him, he had entered the apartment through an unlocked window and had been staying there quietly because he was “between homes.” He claimed he avoided interacting with neighbors or leaving traces, thinking no one would notice.Neighbors say they had seen Hasan occasionally entering the building but assumed he was a visitor or relative of the tenant. “We noticed a man carrying groceries a couple of times,” said one neighbor. “We didn’t think much of it. Honestly, he was very quiet.”The police, when called to the scene, confirmed that Hasan had no criminal record. Inspector Rahim said, “It’s certainly unusual, but he was cooperative. He didn’t damage the property, steal anything, or threaten anyone. He simply overstayed his welcome in the most literal sense.”Despite the lack of violent behavior, the incident sparked widespread debate online.
Social media users flooded platforms with opinions ranging from home security tips to humorous memes about unexpected roommates. One Twitter user joked, “When your Airbnb review says ‘cozy,’ and they weren’t kidding.” Another wrote, “Imagine coming home and finding your new roommate is an uninvited stranger—what a plot twist!”
Experts say this case highlights a growing concern for home security. “Even in familiar neighborhoods, people often overlook simple precautions,” said security consultant Farhana Akter. “Locked doors, surveillance cameras, and smart home devices can prevent situations like this from escalating.”For the woman at the center of the story, the experience has been both shocking and surreal. “I love sharing my space with friends or letting relatives stay over,” she said. “But this… this is next level. I’m double-checking every window and installing a smart camera tomorrow.”Hasan, meanwhile, said he feels remorseful for causing distress. “I never meant to scare anyone,” he said. “I thought I was being careful and respectful, but clearly, I was wrong. I’m glad the situation ended without harm.”
Whether this will inspire stricter home security measures or simply become an internet anecdote, one thing is certain: in today’s connected world, even ordinary apartments can turn into viral headlines. And as this story demonstrates, reality can sometimes be stranger than fiction.
