On 3 January 2026 the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad for the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand. Mohammed Shami did not find a place in the 15-member squad; instead, Mohammed Siraj has been included. Shubman Gill, having recovered from a neck injury, has been handed the captaincy. Shreyas Iyer* has been appointed as the vice-captain.
Due to the return of Shreyas Iyer*, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma have been dropped from the team. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have been rested. Bumrah has been given a break keeping the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup in mind. Hardik is currently not in a physical condition to bowl 10 consecutive overs in the ODI format. He has been excluded from this series to reduce his workload and ensure long-term fitness.
