The truth is that the questions in the IELTS Listening test are designed in a way that will confuse you and make you choose the wrong answer.

Therefore, if you understand these hidden tricks, you will be able to score well in the IELTS Listening test. Then it won’t feel like the script finished before you even understood what was said.

Tip 1 —

Do not rush to write the answer.

There are many scripts where the conversation spend more time discussing the wrong answer, while the correct answer is mentioned only once.

Talking about an option for long time doesn’t mean that’s correct. So listen to the entire conversation.

Example: What was the price of the ticket?

A) 1 USD B) 0.5 USD C) 0.9 USD

Script: Person 1: I always buy tickets for 1 USD, even after knowing that they are expensive. Also, an elderly woman next to me was arguing about the price. Thankfully, the station master recognised me well as a daily passenger, so he gave me a 10% discount that day.

Person 2: So it cost you 0.9 USD?

Person 1: Kind of !

In this case, if you mark 1 USD immediately after hearing it in the first line, your answer will be incorrect.

Tip 2–

Pay attention to singular and plural forms.

Most students write the correct word but lose marks because they fail to add or remove “s” or “es” at the end of the word. In this case, writing the correct word is not enough; you must also write it in the correct form.

Example: The new station master never manages _______ of Chattogram trains.

Script: Person 1: The station service was awful as a 12-year-old boy is often sent for ticket services instead of the new station master himself. Yesterday, I wanted to buy a ticket to Chattogram. The little kid was confused about the tickets and unfortunately gave me a ticket to Dhaka.

In this case, since the word “ticket” is mentioned in singular form initially so many students will write the singular form. However, if you listen carefully until the end, you will understand that the conversation refers to multiple tickets, not just one.

Additionally, many students stop listening carefully after writing the correct answer. This must be avoided. After mentioning the correct answer, the script often provides additional information such as the number, tense, or other relevant details.

In short, achieving a good band score requires practice and faith . While listening, you should not only hear the words but also clearly understand what is being said.
